Engine pistons are typically made of cast aluminum alloy with a high silicon content (≥16%). They are characterized by high wear resistance, stringent geometric dimensional accuracy, low surface roughness, and demanding tool life requirements. Consequently, most machining operations employ superhard cutting tools, including PCD (polycrystalline diamond) external turning tools, PCD pin‑hole boring tools, PCD grooving tools, PCBN (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) wedge grooving tools, among others.
