Tablets (such as the iPad) are manufactured using a zero-defect manufacturing process originally developed for the aerospace and defense industries. The device starts as a solid aluminum plate, which is precisely machined to create the required cavity structure. A PCD 3-flute milling cutter hollows out the inner cavity of the aluminum frame, leaving the thinnest section at just 0.7 mm. A PCD form milling tool then shapes the contour of the tablet’s back cover. A PCD chamfering cutter performs rough milling of the device’s edge chamfers, while an MCD chamfering cutter completes the fine milling of these edges.
