The ball cage of the automotive steering gear is an important component—you’ll find one in every vehicle. It is typically made of hardened steel (HRC 60). The ball raceway demands high precision and a fine surface finish, and since the machining involves interrupted milling of hardened steel, it places high requirements on PCBN milling cutters—cutting efficiency and tool life must be excellent. In the past, these cutters relied heavily on imports, but we’re pleased to see that domestic Chinese manufacturers have actively tackled this challenge and have now successfully replaced the imported ones.
